Project 4
AVANT GARDE / ABSURD DESIGN!
For this assignment, you will research and harness the visual design languages of diagrams, layouts, and illustrations, and then render them absurd. There are countless exciting sources of inspiration for this project-- from architectural plans to medical illustrations, graphs, charts, schematics, tag clouds, product designs, and many other types of information visualization.
Once you have pinpointed a graphic language to engage, your goal will be to creatively subvert that design system in a completely unexpected and original way. Try to use one unified visual system that you find interesting or inspiring, but apply this system to a context unrelated to its origin. What could this mean? There are examples pasted below. Your goal, however, is to come up with your own!! Feel free to reach out to your professor for brainstorming if you’re having trouble coming up with an idea you feel good about.
Examples:
i.Electrical schematic visuals + the growth rate of a corn cob
ii.Meat packaging + pharmaceutical labels
iii. Dental illustrations + political propaganda
iv.Apartment floor plans + hair gel container designs
PROCESS
First, research some visual design systems, and save some images for reference. Your goal should be to identify the strongest design elements in each point of inspiration, and synthesize these design processes / re-apply them / or transform them within your new, clever design approach.
Rather than relying on Pinterest and other such sites for your inspiration, look out into the world and in everyday places for visual information systems. Dig up graphic languages used by industries, government systems, and individual companies. You must save at least four example images of visual information systems that you researched for your project. You will share these collected research images with the class during the final critique.
Create your project in Photoshop and/or Illustrator, and make sure that the work is created at 300dpi and with the Canvas measuring no less than 6 inches on the smallest side. Remember to practice the non-destructive editing techniques and skills we have learned.
NSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION
When the work is complete, upload your finished layered .PSD or .AI document, and a flattened JPEG or PDF of the project to Canvas. Please also paste or attach a 200 to 300 word artist statement into the assignment portal on Canvas, as well as any inspiration images / research images gathered during your idea-development process.
For Critique, come prepared to explain your project and its goals, alongside collected images of visual information systems that were your inspiration. Even if for some reason you are unable to finish your project before the critique, you MUST attend the critique. Your participation in critique (physical presence, critical contribution, sharing in discussion, etc.) counts for a large percentage of your project grade.
Tips // Instruction:
Remember, comics and sequences are also funny. The “How to” makes a very iterating format.
Use the visual and conceptual language of information to make a humorous illustration. Continue using Photoshop and Illustrator.
Given the proximity to portfolio review, this final project can be printed.
Because its so universal, information design can be deadly funny.
Considering your everyday experience, explore how a simple graphic illustration styles to play with taboo, as a critique of information systems.
If you're struggling to find connection-, draw inspiration from the slideshow shown in class to borrow and remix visual languages from all over
Grading
Equal weight will be given to the quality of your illustration style, composition and content
Digital editions of the project should be submitted to Canvas by 11:59 on Nov 28.
